Restaurants, hotels and other commercial establishments in Delhi have been allowed to temporarily use alternative fuels instead of natural gas for cooking and other operations. The decision comes as businesses face difficulties due to disruptions in the supply of cooking gas. Authorities say the relaxation will remain in place for one month and aims to help the hospitality sector continue its operations without major disruptions.

Temporary relief amid gas supply disruption

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) issued an order allowing industries and commercial establishments in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) to switch to alternative fuels for a limited period. The order was issued on March 13 and permits the use of fuels such as high-speed diesel, biomass and refuse-derived fuel pellets as substitutes for natural gas.

The decision was taken after authorities reviewed the situation with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and city gas distribution agencies. Officials said the relaxation is an interim arrangement that will remain in effect for one month to help businesses manage the shortage.

Coal and kerosene may also be allowed temporarily

The order also stated that if the availability of other alternative fuels is limited, coal and kerosene could be used temporarily. The move is part of broader efforts to ensure that businesses are able to continue operations despite the fuel supply disruption.

Authorities said the decision comes in view of the ā€œextraordinary situationā€ caused by disruptions in global energy supply. The central government has also issued the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, to ensure equitable distribution and availability of natural gas for priority sectors such as households and transport.

Commercial establishments such as restaurants and hotels have been among the worst affected by the supply crunch because they rely heavily on LPG cylinders or natural gas for cooking. Across several cities, eateries have reported difficulty in obtaining gas cylinders, forcing some to cut down menus or explore other cooking methods.

The temporary permission to use alternative fuels is expected to provide short-term relief to restaurants and hotels struggling with fuel shortages. While the measure may help businesses continue operating for now, industry stakeholders say a stable supply of cooking gas will be crucial for the hospitality sector in the coming weeks.
