Delhi and several parts of north India felt tremors on Friday night after a strong earthquake struck Afghanistan. The sudden shaking led to brief moments of panic, with some residents stepping out of their homes and workplaces as a precaution.

According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake measured up to 5.9 in magnitude. The epicentre was located in the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border region, within the seismically active Hindu Kush area. The quake occurred at a considerable depth of around 177 km, a factor that allows seismic waves to travel longer distances. This explains why tremors were experienced across northern parts of India despite the epicentre being far away.
