Millennium Park, a popular riverside spot in central Kolkata, has been closed indefinitely due to escalating election-related tensions in the area. The decision was taken as a precautionary measure, considering the park’s proximity to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office, which is located directly opposite.

Authorities asked all visitors to leave the premises on Friday afternoon before shutting the gates. The move comes in response to repeated unrest and gatherings outside the CEO office in recent days, as political activity intensifies ahead of the elections.

Section 163 imposed

Security has been tightened across the area, with Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, previously known as Section 144, imposed at multiple locations, including Strand Road. A portion of the road has also been closed to control movement and prevent large gatherings.

Officials have restricted access to key points around the CEO's office to maintain order and avoid further escalation.

Shipping jetty closure likely to affect commuters

Alongside the park, the adjacent shipping jetty has also been shut for security reasons. This is expected to inconvenience many daily commuters, especially those working in and around Fairley Place.

The jetty serves as a key transit point for people crossing the Ganges by launch. Many commuters rely on this route to avoid road traffic and reach Howrah quickly for train connections. With the jetty closed, alternative travel arrangements may lead to delays and congestion.

The decision follows a series of tense incidents outside the CEO office. On March 31, a clash broke out between Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters on Strand Road over allegations related to Form 6 submissions. The situation turned chaotic before police and central forces intervened to restore order.

Earlier, the area had also witnessed protests by booth-level officers and political workers during different phases of the election process.

No timeline for reopening yet

Authorities have not announced when Millennium Park or the shipping jetty will reopen. With political temperatures continuing to rise, security measures are likely to remain in place until the situation stabilises.
