A heatwave alert has been issued across several parts of India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of a steady rise in temperatures over the coming days. A yellow alert is in place across multiple states, urging residents to remain cautious amid intensifying heat.
IMD has predicted heatwave conditions in Uttar Pradesh up to April 20. Similarly, there might be continued heatwaves in Rajasthan and Odisha until April 22. However, heatwaves can occur in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra on April 19. In the same way, heatwave conditions may prevail in Jharkhand from April 20-21.
The department has advised people living in these areas not to expose themselves to excessive heat and to stay indoors during the peak afternoon times. This is because the temperature in some parts of the country has already soared to 45 C in some places, such as Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh and Wardha in Maharashtra.

Rise in temperatures in north India
In north India, including Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, temperatures are expected to rise by 3 to 5 C until April 24. The IMD has indicated that this increase could intensify discomfort levels, especially during the daytime.
Mostly sunny weather will prevail for Delhi with the possibility of clouds forming towards the latter part of the day. Temperatures will remain relatively high, with the maximum ranging between 39C and 41C, making it 3C above the normal. Likewise, minimum temperatures will be higher at 22C to 24C.
The surface wind is predicted to move in a northwesterly direction at a speed of up to 10 kmph in the early morning hours and rise to less than 15 kmph by late afternoon.

Rainfall and humid conditions in other regions
While heatwave conditions persist in central and northern parts, other regions may witness Although heatwave conditions prevail in the central and northern areas, the rest of the country might experience rains and high humidity. Rain, thunderstorms, and lightning have been predicted for Arunachal Pradesh during April 19-21, Assam & Meghalaya on April 19 & 21, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on April 19.
Hot and humid weather is also likely in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Karnataka, Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next few days.
