New era vs legacy: CSK and MI redefine approach ahead of IPL 2026

IPL 2026 marks a generational shift as CSK and MI overhaul strategies, balancing youth and experience in evolving cricket dynamics.

The blockbuster cricket event is all set to start from March 28. Bengaluru will host the first match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on the opening night. This year's IPL is going to be important in every aspect, World cricket is rolling into a new period while the Og era is coming to an end soon, Gen Z has already placed their hand on the desk, tightly and changed their approach by showing a roadmap for the future of cricket.

Legacy teams like CSK and MI have not done well in the recent past. It’s been five years since MI has won any trophy. They last increased their trophy count to five by winning the IPL in 2020.

On the other hand, CSK has not qualified for the playoffs for the second season in a row for the first time in IPL history. In the 2026 auction, both teams had changed their approach, CSK went for youngsters, while Mumbai stuck with their experienced core. Both teams have exchanged their philosophies, because the last two seasons, was a wake-up call for both teams. Modern-day cricket does not allow anyone to stop, and that not only comes from experience but also requires a fearless approach to the game.

Philosophy and perspectives

In the past, we have seen how MI has produced a lot of talent and also we have seen how CSK built their core. But for this season, both teams have changed their perspective and built a new philosophy around that, CSK prioritised new faces. Mumbai Indians have gone with experienced young talents.

The change in the philosophy clearly shows that both teams are going through a transition phase, players who had built a strong owner-player relationship, they have already retired, now new faces for the future are coming.

Stalwart teams like MI and CSK are making an effort to crack the winning formula of modern-day cricket. Banking on the talented youth or relying on the old guns which Perspective will work, it will be interesting to evaluate.
