Jadavpur University has decided to introduce its own counselling process for B.Tech admissions from the next academic year, aiming to maintain academic excellence and attract meritorious students. The proposal was approved at a meeting of the university’s highest policy-making body, the Executive Council (EC), on Sunday, and a letter has been sent to the Education Department seeking approval.
The move comes amid concerns over delays in the state Joint Entrance Board’s centralised counselling process, which often results in top-ranking students opting for general degree courses or securing seats in premier institutions like IITs and NITs. University authorities believe that this shift is impacting Jadavpur’s NIRF rankings and placement outcomes. This year, nearly 150 out of 1,308 seats remained vacant.

Former Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Parthapratim Biswas, pointed out that prolonged counselling timelines delay the academic session by nearly three months, putting additional pressure on students.
In addition to undergraduate admissions, the university has also decided to conduct its own entrance examination and counselling for lateral entry.

However, the proposal has met with some resistance. Gautam Pal, the state government-nominated EC member and Chairman of the Joint Entrance Board, has opposed the move. Despite this, a section of the university remains firm, advocating for greater autonomy in academic decisions and expressing confidence that the change will ensure the timely commencement of classes.
