Billionaire boom 2026: Where does India stand in the global wealth race?

The global billionaire count has climbed to 3,428 across 80 countries, with more than half concentrated in just three nations, the United States, China and India, according to the latest rankings by Forbes.

The global billionaire club continues to grow with each passing year. According to the latest global wealth rankings by Forbes, there are now a total of 3,428 billionaires across 80 countries. While their combined fortunes run into trillions of dollars, more than half of them are concentrated in just three countries that is a clear sign of how unevenly wealth is distributed worldwide.

US, China dominate; India holds No. 3 spot

The United States leads the list with 989 billionaires and a combined net worth of $8.4 trillion. It is also home to the world’s richest individual, Elon Musk. In 2026 alone, the US added 106 new billionaires, including celebrities like Taylor Swift and Dr Dre, Beyonce Knowles-Carter.

China ranks second with 539 billionaires, whose wealth totals $2.2 trillion. Zhang Yiming tops the list as China’s richest person who is the cofounder of TikTok's parent company Byte Dance.

India stands third with 229 billionaires and a combined wealth of $1 trillion, led by Mukesh Ambani.

Top 10 list and shifting global trends

The rest of the top five includes Germany (212 billionaires) and Russia (147). Countries like Italy, Canada, Hong Kong, Brazil and Taiwan also feature in the top 10. The rankings also saw some movement this year. The United Kingdom slipped to 12th place, while Pakistan returned to the billionaire list after a 16-year gap.

Top economies leading billionaire wealth

Among the rest, Russia has 147 billionaires with a combined $649 billion, led by Alexey Mordashov and family. Germany, with 212 billionaires and $1 trillion in wealth, is topped by Dieter Schwarz. Further down the list, Italy (89 billionaires) is led by Giancarlo Devasini, while Canada (82) is topped by Changpeng Zhao. Hong Kong, with 71 billionaires, counts Robin Zeng as its richest. Brazil (70) is led by Eduardo Saverin, while Taiwan, with 66 billionaires, is topped by Terry Gou.

The 2026 rankings highlight a clear trend, while global wealth continues to grow, it remains heavily concentrated in a few major economies. India’s strong third-place position reflects its rising economic influence on the global stage.
