The Uttar Pradesh government has issued a new food safety directive. Egg producers across the state must now stamp each egg with its laying date and expiry date. This rule takes effect on April 1.
Eggs found without these markings will face strict consequences. Authorities will either destroy them or label them "not fit for human consumption".

Why was this rule introduced?
Shelf life is the core concern. At around 30 degrees Celsius, eggs stay safe for only two weeks after laying. At cooler temperatures, between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius, they last up to five weeks. The directive aims to protect public health by ensuring consumers know how fresh their eggs are before buying or eating them.
UP currently has only two dedicated egg cold storages, Agra and Jhansi, a very small number for a large state. According to The Times of India, citing the Food Safety and Drug Administration department, eggs cannot share cold storage space with vegetables. Both require different temperature conditions, making mixed storage impractical.
Chief secretary, animal husbandry and dairy, Mukesh Meshram also added, "It was found that in many cases rules were not being adhered to. Consumers were also unaware of it.”
What happens next?
From April 1, stamping becomes compulsory for all egg producers. The Food Safety and Drug Administration department will oversee enforcement. The state government hopes this step will bring more accountability to egg supply chains. It will also help buyers make safer choices at the point of purchase.
