FC Barcelona are continuing its tradition of promoting youth, as manager Hansi Flick has called up 17-year-old winger Toni Fernández to train with the senior squad.

Young talent steps into first-team spotlight

According to Barca Universal, the youngster joined first-team sessions ahead of Barcelona’s crucial La Liga clash against Atlético Madrid, with several senior players still unavailable following the international break. Another academy player, Brian Farinas, was also spotted in training.

Opportunity opens amid injury concerns

Fernandez’s inclusion comes at a key moment, with Raphinha expected to be sidelined for at least a month. This absence could open the door for the La Masia graduate to feature more prominently in the coming weeks. While Flick has other attacking options, including Marcus Rashford higher up in the pecking order, the demanding schedule means rotation will be crucial, potentially giving the teenager valuable minutes.

Already trusted by Flick

Fernandez is not entirely new to the first-team setup. He has previously featured under Flick, including appearances against Barbastro and Girona, showing glimpses of his potential. His performances for Barcelona’s reserve side have been impressive, with eight goals and two assists in 21 league starts this season. Known for his attacking instincts, he averages over a shot per game and consistently contributes in the final third.

Fitness key to breakthrough

Despite his promise, injuries have slowed Fernandez’s rise. Staying fit will be crucial if he is to capitalise on this opportunity and cement his place in the senior squad. With Barcelona navigating a packed schedule and key injuries, Toni Fernandez’s call-up highlights the club’s continued faith in youth. If he can seize the moment, the 17-year-old could emerge as the latest La Masia success story under Hansi Flick.
