Kolkata woke up to a cloudy sky on Wednesday morning, with brief sunshine breaking through and a slight hint of fog. As the day progresses, clearer skies are expected. The minimum temperature stands at 24.6C, which is 0.5 degrees above normal, while the maximum temperature is recorded at 31.9C, about 2.8 degrees below normal. This indicates a gradual rise in both day and night temperatures, even as daytime conditions remain relatively moderate.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has ruled out any major rainfall activity in Kolkata on Wednesday and Thursday. However, a noticeable change in the weather is expected from Friday onwards, with conditions turning favourable for thunderstorms.
Nor’wester alert for South Bengal
The weather department has forecast a strong possibility of nor’wester across several districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata, between Friday and Sunday. These pre-monsoon storms may bring gusty winds, rainfall, and even hail in some areas.

Districts such as Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, West Midnapore, and parts of East Bardhaman are likely to experience wind speeds ranging between 50 and 60 km per hour. Alongside this, increased moisture in the air is expected to push up humidity levels, especially in coastal regions. Foggy conditions may persist through the week, adding to the discomfort.
North Bengal may see heavy rain and hail
In North Bengal, particularly the upper six districts, Wednesday may bring spells of heavy rain along with thunderstorms and hail. The intensity of rainfall is expected to reduce later in the day. Thursday is likely to remain relatively dry, but rainfall activity may pick up again from Friday.
Weekend travel advisory
With storm activity expected to intensify towards the weekend, residents and travellers are advised to stay updated with weather alerts. Carrying an umbrella or rain gear would be a sensible precaution while stepping out during this period.
