South Bengal is expected to witness an increase in heat and humidity over the next few days, with the weather getting uncomfortable from April 2nd to April 4th. A special weather bulletin has been issued by the India Meteorological Department, stating that the weather is expected to be “hot and humid” over several districts in South Bengal.

The dry winds blowing from the west and north-west are causing the mercury to rise. Over the next four days, the maximum temperature is expected to increase by 4 to 6 degrees Celsius. This means the temperatures will be around 3 to 5 degrees above normal for the time of the year.

Districts under alert

The Alipur Meteorological Department has identified several districts that will experience these conditions between April 2 and 4. These include South 24 Parganas, Howrah, West Medinipur, Bankura, West Bardhaman, and Purulia. Birbhum and Kolkata are also expected to come under the hot and humid spell from April 3 onwards. The upcoming weekend is likely to feel particularly harsh.

High humidity adds to discomfort

The humidity levels are anticipated to remain high, especially in coastal districts where the relative humidity could rise up to 80 to 90 per cent. Inland districts are also anticipated to have humidity levels between 70 and 80 per cent. This will cause a combination of heat and moisture in the air, which will make the conditions feel sticky for most people.

The prevailing weather may affect vulnerable members of society more seriously, such as children, seniors, and those with pre-existing health issues. People have been cautioned to refrain from stepping out during peak hours of the day, especially between 11 am and 4 pm. Drinking water is a must to avoid dehydration and stress.

The weather department is expected to come out with their latest updates soon, as the situation is still fluid.
