Uber Shuttle, the app-based shared bus service, is set to go off Kolkata roads from April 2, a move that could disrupt the daily routine of hundreds of office commuters. Known for its fixed routes, assured seating and relatively pocket-friendly fares, the service had emerged as a convenient bridge between overcrowded public transport and costly cab rides.

The company has not officially spelt out the reasons for the shutdown, but regulatory and operational challenges are believed to have played a role. Its departure is likely to leave a gap, especially for those who relied on it for a predictable, hassle-free commute between residential neighbourhoods and key office hubs during rush hours.

Daily commute set for disruption

Uber Shuttle had become a reliable mode of transport for many, especially between areas like New Town, Salt Lake, Garia, and Howrah. The punctual and organised nature of the Uber Shuttle had made it a favourite among office-goers.

With the withdrawal of the Uber Shuttle, many commuters are bracing themselves for a possible shift to less reliable modes of transport. The move will also put more pressure on Kolkata’s already congested public transport system.

Alternatives you can choose from

In the absence of Uber Shuttle, commuters are offered a variety of alternatives, which are suitable for different needs, budgets, and distances.

The app-based services offered by Rapido (bike taxis and autos), Yatri Sathi (the state-sponsored cab aggregator), Ola and Uber (cabs and autos), and InDrive (where users can negotiate prices) are still available for providing flexibility in point-to-point connectivity. These are ideal for last-mile connectivity, although there is a possibility of price fluctuations during rush hours.

On the other hand, traditional modes of transportation, such as WBTC and private buses, Kolkata Metro, and suburban local trains, are still the most economical options, although there are issues with overcrowding and timing.

Amid this transition, another bus commute app-based service, Cityflo, has also started operations in the Kolkata market. The company has introduced 200 buses on 30+ routes, covering areas such as Ranikuthi, Bijoygarh, Sonarpur, Baruipur, Joka, Barasat, Barrackpore, Howrah, with the office hubs of Kolkata, such as Sector 5 and areas such as Ecospace, Hathisala in New Town.

While the concept is somewhat similar to Uber Shuttle, the long-term success of the bus commute app-based service will depend on various factors.
