A 34-year-old man was found dead inside his house in South Kolkata’s Sarsuna area on Tuesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Sunny Singh, a resident of Ekbalpore Lane.

According to police, Singh was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside his house. His sister, Sangita Shaw (39), has filed a complaint accusing Singh’s wife, Punita Singh (33), and her brother, Rakesh Paswan, of murder and common intention.

As per a report of The Indian Express, police received a call around 6:55 am and reached the house soon after. When officers arrived, Singh’s body was found lying on the ground. His wife initially claimed that he had died by suicide.

Sequence of events before the body was found

One of the neighbours, Kallol Hirak, told police that Punita informed him that her bedroom was locked from the outside and that she was trapped inside the room with her daughter. She sought help from neighbours. Hirak went to assist her, following which Punita went to the balcony adjacent to her room. From there, with help from neighbours, she managed to come down.

“She opened the grill gate of the main entrance of her house with a key, in the presence of her neighbour and found that the wooden gate was kept ajar,” a police official said, adding, “During the enquiry, it was learnt that the lock of the wooden gate was earlier broken by Sunny during a quarrel.”

According to police, after entering the dining room with neighbours, Punita found Sunny hanging from the ceiling fan, with a ligature mark around his neck.

"No marks of external injury could be found except a non-continuous ligature mark around Sunny Singh’s neck. The body was sent to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where he was declared brought dead at about 07.45 hrs by the hospital EMO,” police said.

Domestic dispute in question

Investigations revealed ongoing domestic disputes between Sunny and Punita. Police said Punita had filed a complaint against him at Sarsuna police station in December 2025. On Monday night, following a quarrel, Sunny allegedly drove his wife and daughter out of the house. They later returned with police intervention.

Sunny was known to have a drinking problem, which often led to disputes, police said. “During inquiry, it was learnt that there were domestic disputes going on between the deceased and his wife Punita and that they had started residing at the said address on rent since last six month,” a police official said.

A post-mortem examination conducted at Kantapukur Police Morgue confirmed that the cause of death was hanging. A case has been registered against Punita Singh and Rakesh Paswan under Sections 103(1) (murder) and 3(5) (common intention) at Sarsuna Police Station.
