Scottish Church College student dies under mysterious circumstances, probe underway

A 21-year-old college student was found unconscious in her hostel’s sick room hours after falling ill, with doctors flagging possible poisoning.

Mysterious death of a Scottish Church College student. On January 23, the student named Rishita Banik (21) fell ill in the college hostel and was taken to the 'sick room'. The next day, on January 24, Rishita was found unconscious on the floor of the sick room. She was rushed to RG Kar Medical College Hospital. There, doctors declared her dead at 6:50 PM. The matter came to light on January 31. Rishita's home is in Tripura. She was a fifth-semester student of Political Science. Her body has been autopsied. The police have not yet received that report. However, doctors are preliminarily informing investigators that the student's death was caused by consuming something toxic. Questions are being raised whether the student ate that food herself or was it fed to her. Police say a complete investigation of the entire incident will be conducted.

What exactly happened?

According to police sources, unable to contact her daughter by phone, Rishita's mother called her roommate at 1:45 PM on January 24. The roommate informed that Rishita had fallen ill around 9:30 PM on January 23. She was taken to the sick room. Since then, the roommate had no contact with Rishita. After receiving the student's mother's call, the roommate went to the sick room. Going there, she saw Rishita lying unconscious on the floor of that room on the fourth floor of the hostel. After that, the roommate called the hostel authorities. That same day, around 2:30 PM, Rishita was admitted to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On the evening of January 24, doctors declared her dead there.

Baruipur police station has registered an unnatural death case and started an investigation. No suicide note has been recovered. So far, no complaint has been filed by the student's family or hostel authorities. The autopsy was completed on January 25. That report has not yet been received. Doctors are preliminarily saying that this student had consumed something toxic. Did she eat it intentionally, or is there some other mystery behind it? Police are investigating.
