The build-up includes additional sailors, Marines, Special Operations forces and support units. About 2,500 Marines had already arrived in the region over the weekend. Reports suggest the newly-deployed personnel include elements of the 82nd Airborne headquarters, logistics teams, support staff and one brigade combat team.
US officials told Reuters that no final decision has been made to send troops into Iran. However, the deployment is aimed at strengthening Washington's ability to respond to possible future scenarios if required.
Tehran signals readiness
The release of the Iranian footage appears intended to send a clear message as tensions escalate. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that any ground incursion would be met with retaliation. The "Come Close" video adds to this messaging, portraying elite units as prepared for direct confrontation.
Iran's Foreign minister had earlier cautioned the US against a ground invasion. Since then, state media and military communications have increasingly focused on projecting preparedness and deterrence.
Military positioning raises stakes
The situation reflects a phase marked by military positioning and strategic signalling. While diplomatic engagement continues to be discussed publicly, the arrival of the 82nd Airborne, one of the US military's rapid-response forces, has intensified speculation about possible escalation.
