History and origin

A long time ago, Pope Gregory XIII created the Gregorian calendar in 1592 and moved the New Year from the end of March to January 1. The exact origin of April Fool’s Day is not clear, but one idea is that it started in 1582 when some people still celebrated the New Year in April and were called “April fools.”

According to Britannica, it is also linked to an old Roman festival called Hilaria, held on March 25 to honour Goddess Cybele, where people wore costumes and played tricks. Over time, these ideas turned into the fun day of jokes and pranks we celebrate today.

April Fool’s Day is all about laughter and spending happy moments with others. It gives people a break from daily stress and lets them enjoy fun and clever pranks.

In Scotland, the day used to last two days. The first day, called “hunting the gowk”, sent people on fake tasks, and the second day, “Tailie Day”, was for playful pranks on people’s backsides.

The first written record of April Fool’s Day in England is from 1686, when it was called “Fooles holy day”. By the 18th and 19th centuries, it became popular across Britain.
