Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming leadership of Iran while expressing condolences over the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.
In a letter addressed to Mojtaba Khamenei, Sharif conveyed sympathy on behalf of the people of Pakistan following the death of the senior Iranian leader and wished the new Supreme Leader success in guiding the country.
According to an official statement, Sharif said the people of Pakistan were deeply saddened by the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and stood in solidarity with the leadership and citizens of Iran during the period of mourning.

New leadership in Iran
Mojtaba Khamenei was elected as Iran’s Supreme Leader by the country’s Assembly of Experts, which is composed of 88 clerical body mandated to select Iran’s highest authority.
Iranian state TV confirmed this on Monday after the death of Ali Khamenei, who had served Iran for decades. In his message, Sharif referred to the late leader as “a person whose death caused sadness for all Muslims around the world.”

Pakistan stresses significance of bilateral relations
Sharif underscored the significance of Pakistan’s ties with Iran and noted that the relationship between Iran and Pakistan is not new; it is based on our shared religion, culture, and history.
The prime minister said Pakistan remained committed to strengthening cooperation with Iran across areas of mutual interest. He added that Islamabad hopes to continue working closely with Tehran to advance regional stability and promote prosperity for the people of both countries.
