In today's digital age, social media, YouTube, cinema, or web series have become a major part of our daily lives. However, it's one thing as long as it remains in the realm of entertainment. And with excessive consumption of all these mediums, we often start considering celebrities, influencers, or fictional characters as very close people. In psychology, this one-sided emotional relationship is called a parasocial relationship.
Simply put, a parasocial relationship is a relationship where one person feels a deep emotional connection with another person, but that person doesn't even know of their existence. Usually, this develops with celebrities, TV personalities, social media influencers, and even fictional characters.

This concept was first introduced in the 1950s by sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl. Television viewers also often develop emotional relationships with TV hosts or actors in such a way as if they know them personally.
Why do parasocial relationships develop?
Currently, social media is playing a major role in creating such relationships. When a celebrity speaks directly looking at the camera in YouTube videos, Instagram live sessions, vlogs, or podcasts, viewers feel as if they are speaking personally. This creates a sense of intimacy.
A fan regularly follows the life updates of their favorite actor or influencer, feels joy in their success, or experiences sadness in their problems. Sometimes this emotion becomes so deep that they feel as if that person is their friend or someone close.
Is it always bad?
Not all parasocial relationships are bad. Sometimes it helps reduce people's loneliness or provides inspiration. For example, seeing a successful person can also inspire someone to move forward in life.
Where's the problem?
However, the problem arises when this relationship starts affecting real-life relationships. If someone moves away from real friends or family and becomes emotionally dependent only on celebrities or online personalities, then it can be harmful to mental health.

Are you in a parasocial relationship?
Ask yourself some questions: Do you think too much about the life of a celebrity or influencer? Are your emotions too involved in their success or failure? Do you feel uncomfortable if you don't see them? If the answer is 'yes', then perhaps you are in a parasocial relationship.
However, it's important to remember that real-life relationships are most important for people's mental health. So enjoy the online world but give equal importance to real relationships as well.
