Thousands of Instagram users reported problems accessing parts of the platform on Tuesday, with many saying that the app’s direct messaging feature stopped working. According to outage tracking website Downdetector, more than 4,700 complaints had been logged at the time of writing, pointing to a sudden spike in service disruptions.
Many users said they were unable to send or receive direct messages, leaving conversations interrupted and causing frustration across the platform.
Messaging feature triggers most complaints
Data shared on Downdetector indicated that the majority of complaints were linked to Instagram’s messaging function. Users reported that messages failed to send, conversations stopped loading, or replies could not be delivered.

Several users also said they were cut off in the middle of ongoing chats. Others noticed delays in messages appearing or said the app showed errors while trying to open conversations.
The outage tracking site also showed that some users faced problems with the app itself, while others experienced issues with server connections and posting content.
Outage reported across major US cities
Downdetector’s outage map suggested that the disruption affected several locations across the United States. Cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington and New York were among the areas where users reported problems.
Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, allows users to interact publicly through likes, comments and shares. However, direct messages remain one of the most widely used features on the platform for private conversations.
The disruption, therefore, left many users turning to other social media platforms to check whether others were facing similar problems.

Users react online as DMs stop working
Frustrated users quickly began posting about the issue online. Some questioned whether Instagram’s messaging service had stopped working entirely, while others wondered if the problem was limited to their accounts.
"Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN", one person wrote. Another wrote, "is instagram down rn??? dms arent working for me is it just me.”
A third user wrote, "are the messages delayed to show???"
As of now, Instagram has not issued a statement explaining the cause of the disruption. Users continue to report issues while waiting for clarity from the platform.
