The cherry blossom season is now not exclusive to Japan. From North America to Europe and parts of Asia, cities and regions are fast becoming new major Sakura spots, providing similar visual experiences but with their own unique settings and, in many instances, fewer crowds.

Travel planners note that interest in other cherry blossom spots is increasing steadily, especially because of Japan’s increasing tourism and the short period of peak blooms.

From Washington to Shillong, blossoms go global

In America, Washington D.C. is among the more established cherry blossom spots outside of Japan. The Tidal Basin, with its many Yoshino cherry trees, is at the center of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which takes place each March.

In India, Shillong offers a different seasonal rhythm. The city’s Himalayan cherry blossoms bloom in November, covering the Khasi Hills and areas around Ward’s Lake in shades of pink against a misty backdrop.

Paris, meanwhile, sees a seasonal shift in April, with cherry blossoms appearing around landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, while quieter spots like Square Jean XXIII and Parc de Sceaux attract locals for picnics under flowering trees.

Germany’s Bonn has also gained global attention for its “pink tunnel” on Heerstraße, where rows of cherry trees arch over narrow streets during peak bloom.

Asian destinations expand beyond Japan

South Korea’s Jinhae hosts one of the region’s largest cherry blossom festivals, with Yeojwa Stream and Gyeonghwa Station among the most photographed sites. Nearby, Jeju Island offers a distinct variation through its native King Cherry trees, often blooming alongside bright yellow canola fields.

In China, Wuhan is also establishing itself as a hub for cherry blossom viewing, especially around Wuhan University and East Lake Cherry Blossom Garden, which boasts thousands of trees.

Canada’s Vancouver completes the list, hosting more than 40,000 cherry blossom trees, including in residential areas, accompanied by an annual festival celebrating local culture infused with Japanese traditions.

Changing travel patterns

Experts in tourism have pointed out that tourists are looking beyond Japan for their cherry blossom experience, especially because of crowd management issues and increasing costs during peak season.

Though Japan is at the heart of global perception of cherry blossom, other places are establishing their identity in association with the blooms.
