Many people experience blocked ears or excessive pressure when flying. The main reason for this is changes in air pressure. When an aircraft rapidly ascends or descends, the external air pressure suddenly changes. But the pressure inside our ears cannot adjust immediately. As a result, the ears feel stuffed, painful, or a certain sound can be heard.

Why does this happen?

This problem mainly occurs when the Eustachian tube doesn't function properly. The primary cause of pressure or blockage in the ears while flying is rapid changes in air pressure. Even when external pressure changes, the pressure inside the ears remains the same. If the Eustachian tube cannot open properly, this problem increases. As a result, the ears feel stuffed, painful, or sounds can be heard. Usually, this is temporary and gets better once the pressure equalises. However, following some simple rules can significantly reduce this discomfort.

Chewing gum or eating something

Chewing gum or eating something during takeoff or landing requires frequent swallowing. This opens the Eustachian tube and allows the pressure inside the ears to adjust to the external pressure. For children, giving candy or milk is also beneficial.

Yawning or trying to swallow forcefully

Deliberately yawning or repeatedly swallowing something helps equalise the pressure inside the ears. Often, if you try to yawn by opening your mouth wide, it opens up your ears.

Pinching nose and applying gentle pressure (Valsalva method)

Blocking the nose and keeping the mouth closed while gently trying to exhale creates pressure inside the ears, which helps open the Eustachian tube. However, applying too much force is not advisable as it can cause damage.

Take precautions in advance if you have cold or cough

If you have cold, sinus, or allergy problems, it's better to use a nasal spray or decongestants as per the doctor's advice before boarding the flight. This keeps the nasal and ear connection pathways open and reduces pressure problems.

Remember, usually this problem is temporary and not dangerous. But if the ears remain blocked for a long time or there is severe pain, you should definitely consult a doctor. With a little awareness, it's possible to enjoy a comfortable flight.
