Untimely rain on Thursday afternoon caused waterlogging in some areas around Kolkata as showers were recorded across six districts of South Bengal, including the city. However, weather conditions are set to change again in the coming days.

According to the latest update from the weather office, there is no possibility of rain in South Bengal, including Kolkata, on Friday and Saturday. Another spell of rain is likely to return from Sunday onwards. Meanwhile, rainfall activity is expected to continue in the districts of North Bengal.

Cyclonic circulation influencing rainfall

The weather department said a cyclonic circulation is currently positioned over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic South Bengal. Due to its influence, a large amount of water vapour is entering the atmosphere over Bengal, increasing the chances of rainfall in the region.

On Thursday, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.2 degrees Celsius. The weather office has indicated that the maximum temperature in South Bengal may rise noticeably on Friday and Saturday. Along with the increase in temperature, humidity-related discomfort is also expected to rise.

Weather outlook for South and North Bengal

The sky over South Bengal is expected to remain mostly clear on Friday and Saturday. However, western and coastal districts may experience partly cloudy conditions at times during the day. Rainfall is likely to return from Sunday, with the intensity expected to increase further on Monday.

During this period, districts such as Birbhum, Murshidabad, East and West Bardhaman, Bankura and Purulia may experience the highest chances of thunderstorms and rain.

In North Bengal, rainfall activity is expected to continue throughout the week. On Friday, thunderstorms with gusty winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour are likely in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and North Dinajpur. Other districts may also witness scattered rain and thunderstorms. Although rainfall may decrease slightly on Saturday, it is expected to intensify again from Sunday.

For Kolkata, the possibility of rain remains low on Friday and Saturday. However, fresh moisture is expected to enter the atmosphere after Saturday night. As a result, the city may receive rain between Sunday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kolkata’s maximum temperature may rise by up to three degrees over the next two days. The increase in moisture in the air could also lead to uncomfortable humid conditions. Temperatures are likely to drop slightly again after Sunday as rainfall returns.
