Every year on March 13, the United States marks K9 Veterans Day to recognise the contribution of military working dogs that have supported troops in challenging missions for decades. The observance highlights the role these animals play in protecting soldiers and assisting in operations where their training and instincts prove vital.

According to Soldiers' Angels, the day honours the "incredible service and sacrifice of Military Working Dogs (MWDs)" that work alongside service members in demanding environments.

Why was March 13 chosen?

The date carries historical importance. March 13 marks the anniversary of the United States Army launching its War Dog Programme during World War II.

As Soldiers' Angels notes, the Army officially began training dogs for combat roles on this day in 1942, creating what later became known as the K-9 Corps.

During the early years of the programme, many dogs were recruited from family homes through initiatives such as Dogs for Defense. These animals were trained for duties, including sentry work, scouting and message delivery. Their performance during wartime demonstrated that trained dogs could play a valuable role in military operations.

Military working dogs in major conflicts

Since World War II, military working dogs have served in several major conflicts involving the United States. These include the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan.

Over time, their roles have expanded significantly. Modern military working dogs are trained for tasks such as explosive detection, search and rescue, patrol and protection, tracking and narcotics detection.

These animals are often able to identify hidden threats long before human troops can detect them, helping prevent attacks and saving lives during operations.

As Soldiers' Angels notes, military dogs "face dangers alongside human troops, provide comfort during stressful deployments, and save lives through their service".

How K9 Veterans Day is observed

To mark K9 Veterans Day, organisations such as Soldiers' Angels organise efforts to support military working dogs and their handlers.

Supporters are encouraged to donate items requested by K9 teams, including large food and water bowls, durable toys and grooming supplies. Financial donations are also used to send care packages to deployed teams.

According to Soldiers' Angels, shipping a single K9 care package overseas costs about $25. These efforts aim to recognise the service of military dogs and ensure they receive proper care while supporting troops in demanding environments.
