As Eid ul Fitr 2026 approaches, the United Arab Emirates has announced a major change in how the festival will be observed. Authorities have decided that Eid prayers will be held only inside mosques this year, with all open-air prayer grounds closed.

The decision comes at a time of rising tensions in the Middle East and reflects a broader effort across Gulf countries to manage large public gatherings more carefully.

No open-air Eid prayers in UAE this year

The announcement was made by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat. Traditionally, Eid prayers in the UAE see thousands gather in open prayer grounds, known as musallas, early in the morning to mark the end of Ramadan.

However, in 2026

All Eid prayers will take place inside mosques

Outdoor prayer grounds will not be used

The rule applies across all emirates

Officials say the move is aimed at ensuring public safety and better crowd management during a sensitive time in the region.

The change is significant because Eid prayers are not just a religious ritual but also a community event. Open grounds usually allow large crowds and families to pray together, creating a festive and shared experience that may now feel limited.

Timing unchanged, other Gulf nations follow

Despite the change in venue, the timing of Eid prayers in the UAE will remain the same. Prayers are expected shortly after sunrise, usually between 5:45 am and 6:30 am depending on the location.

Authorities have advised people to reach early, follow mosque guidelines and avoid last-minute rush, especially since space will now be limited indoors.

Other Gulf countries are also taking similar steps. Kuwait has announced that Eid prayers will be held only inside mosques, with no use of courtyards or open areas.

In Qatar, the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has confirmed that Eid ul Fitr prayers for 1447H will also take place inside mosques, scheduled at 5:53 am, to ensure the safety of worshippers.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is set to host a meeting of foreign ministers from Arab and Islamic countries in Riyadh to discuss regional security and stability, highlighting the broader concerns across the region.

As the festival arrives, celebrations will continue, but with a more controlled and cautious approach across the Gulf.
